Glossary

Analytics

Using software-based algorithms and statistics to derive meaning from data.

Big Data

A collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using traditional database management tools or data processing applications. The challenges include capture, curation, storage, search, sharing, transfer, analysis, and visualization. Big data also may refer to the technology that an organization required to handle the large amounts of data and storage facilities.

Business Intelligence

A set of theories, methodologies, processes, architectures, and technologies that transform raw data into meaningful and useful information for business purposes.

Cloud

A broad term that refers to any Internet-based application or service that is hosted remotely; any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that, in real time over the Internet, extends existing capabilities; the "cloud" is metaphor for the internet and represents the global interconnectedness of online services. Anyone with an internet connection can access the cloud and share data with other online users.

Data

A quantitative or qualitative value.

Data Analytics

The application of software to derive information or meaning from data.

Data Player

Provides access to data searching, sorting, and filtering functionality directly from a website. It also gives the user the capability to share, rate, download, discuss, analyze and print the dataset. Users are always interacting with live data.

Data Set

A dataset is a named collection of data that contains individual data units organized in a specific way, typically in tabular form.

Database

A database contains data stored in a structured format. It includes one or more tables, which each contain multiple fields. Each field is assigned a specific data type, such as a string or integer. These fields include data for each record that is entered into the database. By storing data in organized records, the information in a database can be easily searched, sorted, and updated.

Drill Down

Navigating from all levels of data to the more detailed data.

ETL (Extract, Transform and Load)

A key process in business intelligence and data warehousing that involves extracting data from outside sources, transforming it to fit operational needs and loading it into the end target database.

Exabyte

One million terabytes, or 1 billion gigabytes of information.

Filter

Filtering data is a quick and easy way to find and work with a subset of data. For example, you can filter to see only the values that you specify, filter to see the top or bottom values, or filter to see duplicate values. After you have filtered data in a table, you can either apply another filter or clear a filter to redisplay all of the data.

Group

Data that have been arranged in groups or classes rather than showing all the original entries.

Hosted Solution

A hosted solution is when a third-party is used to house IT infrastructure, be it:

  • Hardware-only where the customer owns, loads, and runs the applications; or
  • Software-only where separate 3rd parties may be involved: one provides the remote cloud data center and one provides the remote application management.

Information Management

The practice of collecting, managing, and distributing information of all types: digital, paper-based, structured, and unstructured.

Location Data

GPS data coordinates describing a geographical location.

Mash-up

Through map mash-ups, multiple datasets can be layered and viewed onto the same base map.

Metadata

Any data used to describe other data.

Query

Asking for information to answer a certain question.

Petabyte

One million gigabytes or 1,024 terabytes of information.

Predictive Analytics

Using statistical functions on one or more datasets, either current or historical, to predict trends or future events.

Public Data

Public information or datasets that were created with public funding.

Relational Database

A tabular database in which data is defined so that it can be reorganized and accessed in a number of different ways.

Rollup

A data rollup is when categories are converted to variables. Rollup allows the user to create a new set of variables from a dataset by computing totals or applying a set of formulas.

Terabyte

One thousand gigabytes of information.

Visualization

Any chart, graph, map or tabular dataset viewed in a data player; with visualizations, raw data can be put to use by deriving meaning or communicating information more effectively.

Yottabyte

One thousand zettabyes or 1 trillion terabytes of information.

Zettabyte

One thousand exabytes or 1 billion terabytes of information.
